Understanding the Pricing of a Doula
Let’s talk about the big question most families have when they first start exploring birth support: “Why does a doula cost that much?” It’s a completely fair question, and one I love to answer, because I think when people understand what’s really included in doula care, it all starts to make sense. So if you’ve seen my rate and wondered what that covers, I’m so glad you’re here! Let’s walk through it together.
Before We Get Into Things, Here’s What To Do If Cost Feels Out of Reach-
I get it, birth is expensive! If you’re drawn to working with me but finances are tight, please reach out. I offer payment plans, and in some seasons I can take one client at a reduced rate. I also work with financial aid services that may be able to help you get access to my services for a discount or for free! I never want money to be the reason someone goes without support.
So What Does The Cost Cover?
1. Time
I spend anywhere from 20–40 hours per client (sometimes more!), between prenatal visits, communication, driving, your birth, and postpartum support. That doesn’t include time spent preparing, doing research just for you, or communicating with your care team when needed.
And when I’m on call, my whole schedule shifts, I don’t take trips, I don’t commit to things I can’t cancel, and I stay mentally and physically ready to go at a moment’s notice.
2. Childcare for My Own Little One
I’m blessed to be a mom, too! In order to support you fully, I need trusted care for my daughter during our visits and especially during your birth. And because birth is unpredictable, that can mean anywhere from a couple of hours to multiple full days. So part of what you’re paying for is my ability to leave home quickly and be present with you without splitting my attention.
3. My Training + Experience
You’re not just hiring someone who’s interested in birth, you’re hiring someone who’s trained, experienced with different birth environments, and constantly learning. I take this work seriously and I pour my heart into it.
4. Travel + Supplies
Whether we’re meeting at your home, the hospital, or the birth center, there’s gas and travel time involved. I also bring tools and comfort items for labor like rebozos, massage oils, and other goodies from my doula bag that are all included in your fee.
5. Behind-the-Scenes
Running a doula practice means paying for things like insurance, website hosting, scheduling tools, continuing education, and taxes. There’s a lot that happens quietly in the background so I can serve you well and keep this work sustainable.
But Honestly? You’re Not Just Paying for Services
You’re investing in the peace of mind that someone who knows you will walk into your birth space with you.
You’re paying for the reassurance of having someone just a text or call away when you’re unsure or overwhelmed.
You’re choosing support for one of the most important moments of your life.
And I promise, I don’t take that lightly.
If you have questions or want to talk through whether doula care is right for you, I’d love to hear from you. You can book a free consultation or just send me a message!
With love,
Gabi
